Reminds me of the Church of Laodicea in Revelation 3:14-16. Too many want to follow Jesus as long as it doesn't inconvenience them. I guess you should count me in the the second school of thought you mentioned above. I would like to see a church where someone stood up and said "We are about to embark on a great adventure, but it is going to take your all. If you are with us, come. If not, please leave. there are plenty of other places that will take a minor commitment."

A good way to look at it. In those terms I think we are talking about how to get people to step into the deeper waters for the first time. An author named Dan Glover described the journey as a beach leading to deeper and deeper water. In that picture, too many people are just sort of sticking their toes in the water.

Shallow water vs deep water...two different experiences, two different locations...both allow you to get wet. Shallow water can be a fun experience and a great way to get comfortable in the water but sooner or later the deep water calls. And, once you've ventured into a deep end study of God's Word, the shallow waters never hold the same appeal .
